At Alicante-Elche airport, customs officials have discovered a remarkable smuggling attempt. A 63-year-old woman was arrested after no fewer than 20,000 Viagra pills were found in her suitcase. The pills, which contained the active ingredient sildenafil citrate, were seized by the Guardia Civil and the Tax Authorities. The woman was travelling from the Dominican Republic to Alicante via Madrid and stood out during a luggage check. A scan of her suitcase revealed unusually dense materials, which prompted an inspection. When her luggage was opened, it was found to be completely filled with the familiar blue pills. The suspect was unable to provide a permit or declaration for the transport of the enormous quantity of medicine. According to the law, travellers are only allowed to carry medicines for personal use, with a maximum supply of three months and accompanied by a valid prescription or medical report. Transporting large quantities without the correct documentation is a criminal offence and is considered smuggling. After a hearing at the court in Elche, the woman has been provisionally released. The seized Viagra pills have been sent for analysis to determine their authenticity and origin.
