Málaga was thrown into disarray on Wednesday by a large-scale taxi strike. Hundreds of angry taxi drivers paralyzed traffic in protest at the sky-high insurance costs, which they say are unsustainable. The action, which lasted until 2 p.m., included roadblocks and loudly honking taxis demanding the attention of the city council. The protest march began at 10 a.m. at the parking lot of the José María Martín Carpena Sports Palace. By 11 a.m., a long column of taxis was moving through the city, with more and more drivers joining. By midday, traffic on the Paseo Marítimo had come to a complete standstill, despite earlier promises to keep lanes clear. The aim of the taxi strike was to hand over a manifesto to Mayor Francisco de la Torre. The drivers are demanding that the city council make a commitment to the national government to stop treating them as high-risk VTC drivers and to reduce their sky-high insurance premiums.
