It’s February, and in Málaga, that can only mean one thing: Carnival! The city bursts at the seams with color, music, and exuberant festivities. Whether you’re a fan of flamboyant costumes, captivating music, or simply want to soak up the vibrant atmosphere, the Málaga Carnival promises an experience you won’t soon forget.
I still remember my first time at this carnival. The streets were filled with laughing people, drums echoed in the distance, and the scent of grilled espetos lingered in the air. I had no idea what to expect, but one thing quickly became clear: this isn’t just a party – this is a celebration of life!
Officially, the Málaga Carnival kicks off with the Concurso Oficial de Agrupaciones de Canto (COAC), a singing competition where groups like the hilarious murgas and poetic comparsas go head-to-head. Their performances are filled with satire, tackling politics, daily life, and most of all, the spirit of celebration.
Starting on February 16, the preliminary rounds take place in the stunning Teatro Cervantes, leading up to the grand finale on February 22 at Plaza de la Constitución. Here, the crème de la crème of the carnival competes for the coveted title.
Want to truly experience the soul of Málaga’s Carnival? This is an event you simply can’t miss!
Personal tip: Get your tickets in advance if you want to attend the performances at Teatro Cervantes, as they tend to sell out quickly!
Once the grand finale is over, the carnival moves from the theater to the streets, and that’s when the real party begins. From February 22, Málaga’s historic center transforms into a spectacular open-air celebration.
The Gran Desfile (Grand Parade) fills the city with dazzling floats, dancers, and musical groups, while the famous Batalla de Flores showers the streets in a cascade of flowers. People throw confetti, sing along to carnival anthems, and the energy is absolutely contagious.
This is the perfect moment to immerse yourself in the atmosphere. Put on a bold costume—everyone does here—and let yourself be carried away by the waves of joy!
Personal tip: Want to experience the best atmosphere? Head to Plaza de la Merced or Calle Larios—this is where everything comes together, and the party reaches its peak!
One of the most spectacular highlights of the carnival is undoubtedly the Drag Queen Gala, held at Plaza de la Constitución. Málaga proves that Carnival is all about expression, freedom, and being yourself—and there’s no better place to celebrate that than here.
The contestants go all out with extravagant costumes, sky-high heels, and an unapologetic attitude. The energy is electric, and the crowd goes absolutely wild. Even if you’ve never seen a drag show before, this is an experience you don’t want to miss!
All celebrations must come to an end, and in Málaga, they do it in their own playful way. On March 2, the carnival is symbolically concluded with the Entierro de la Sardina—or rather, in Málaga’s case, it’s not a sardine but an anchovy (boquerón).
A giant paper anchovy is paraded through the city amid exaggerated wailing and mourning, only to be ceremoniously burned at the end. It’s a bizarre yet hilarious tradition that you simply have to witness at least once!
Personal tip: Want to end the carnival in style? Join the procession and bid farewell to the festivities in your most theatrical way— the more dramatic, the better!
The Málaga Carnival is free to attend, but certain events, such as the COAC final at Teatro Cervantes, require tickets. Check the official website for the full program and ticket information.
The Málaga Carnival is more than just a celebration; it’s an explosion of culture, creativity, and togetherness. It’s the time when the city showcases its most vibrant and exuberant side. One thing is certain: once you’ve experienced it, you’ll definitely want to come back.
So put on your most eye-catching outfit, let yourself be swept away by the music, and experience Málaga at its most festive!
