Motorists will be able to drive toll-free on the AP-7 ring road around Alicante until at least 15 February 2026. Spain’s Transport Ministry has extended the temporary suspension of motorway tolls and is working on abolishing them permanently. The measure was introduced in July to ease congestion on the nearby A-70, which was operating at full capacity at the time.

Since the suspension of the toll, positive results have been achieved, according to the ministry. The fact that the AP-7 ring road is toll-free is related to the A-70. The AP-7 used to be relatively little used, but now has considerably more traffic. This has led to improved road conditions and increased road safety, as long-distance and freight traffic has been diverted from the A-70 to the AP-7.

In addition, the reduction of traffic on the A-70 has made a significant contribution to the reduction of air pollution. Due to less congestion and vehicle standstills, fuel consumption and the emission of CO2 and other harmful substances have decreased. Traffic measurements between September and November indicate a decrease in traffic on the A-70 of 19% to 34%, depending on the traffic.

Road safety on the A-70 also improved, as speeds dropped significantly and the risk of accidents decreased. The increased traffic on the AP-7 led to a decrease in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

Based on these positive results, the ministry has indicated that it will strive to keep the AP-7 toll-free. In addition, the ministry wants to opt for permanent abolition of the toll. This will allow the AP-7 to become a “comfortable, safe and efficient alternative” for road users, while further reducing traffic congestion on the A-70.
