After my experience at the Carnival of Málaga, where I was completely swept up in the exuberant atmosphere and colorful parades, I was hooked. But how would Torrevieja’s carnival compare to Málaga’s grand festivities? Would it be just as spectacular, or would it have a more intimate and personal feel? One thing was certain—I had to experience it for myself.
From February 7 to March 2, Torrevieja is all about carnival, and the first week has already shown why this festival is so special. It’s different from Málaga—perhaps less massive, but certainly no less spectacular. Here, it’s not just about the grand parades; it’s also about intimate, unique events that you won’t find anywhere else.
The festivities kicked off at the Municipal Theater, where comedian Jorge Cremades opened the carnival with his signature humor. The following day, the carnival kings were crowned, and the ‘Golden Shield’ was awarded to Concepción Mercader Valdés, an icon of Torrevieja’s carnival tradition.
What immediately stood out to me was the diversity of the celebrations. Of course, there are the grand parades, but there are also surprising events like the Carnaval Animal Parade, where pets and their owners dress up and take to the streets. These unique touches are what make Torrevieja’s carnival truly special.
One of the most striking moments so far was undoubtedly the 16th National Drag Queen Competition ‘Ciudad de Torrevieja’ on February 15 at the International Auditorium. It was a spectacular evening filled with glitter, extravagant costumes, and performances that electrified the audience. The event was hosted by La Plexy, with a special performance by Bella Vampi, adding to the magic of the night. The crowd was fully engaged, and the contestants competed at the highest level.
A day later, on February 16, the Carnival Theater returned after ten years with the performance “The Banquet of Patience and the Sequiön and His Things”. This was a real treat for lovers of satire and local humor. It’s great to see that Torrevieja’s carnival isn’t just about grand street festivities but also embraces the cultural side of the celebration.
Although the first week was already packed with spectacle, the best is yet to come. This weekend and the final week will feature some of the biggest events of the Torrevieja Carnival 2025.
Sunday, February 23 – The Grand Carnival Parade
This is the moment when everything comes together. Starting at 4:00 PM, countless floats, dancers, and carnival groups will parade through the streets. Vibrant costumes, lively music, and an electrifying atmosphere make this parade one of the highlights of the Torrevieja Carnival.
Saturday, March 1 – The Nighttime Carnival Parade
As the sun sets, the most magical parade of the carnival begins. The streets light up with torches, and the festive energy reaches its peak. This is a night to experience, as the combination of music, dance, and lights creates an enchanting atmosphere.
Sunday, March 2 – The Grand Finale
On the final day of the carnival, the official award ceremony takes place, followed by a closing celebration. It’s the ultimate conclusion to weeks of festivities and the last chance to fully immerse yourself in the carnival madness one last time.
Carnival in Torrevieja has everything a great celebration needs: tradition, spectacle, and a good dose of humor. What makes it truly special is the mix of different events, from classic parades to modern drag shows and comedic theater performances.
If you’re in the area, I highly recommend experiencing at least one of the major parades. Whether you’re drawn to the vibrant processions, the festive atmosphere, or simply want to immerse yourself in one of the biggest celebrations of the year, this is an experience you won’t want to miss.
