The traders at the craft market on La Explanada in Alicante have unanimously rejected the council’s proposal to move their stalls to the Paseo del Puerto. The proposed location, between Lonja del Pescado and Mundo de los Niños, does not offer enough space and poses safety risks, according to the traders.
A council report found that there would be just 40 centimetres of free passage between stalls, hampering both visitors and market trade. Attempts to change the layout proved impossible within the available space. In addition, the location does not meet legal standards, which could cause legal complications. Alicante Market Traders have requested an extension of their licence for La Explanada, where the market was originally scheduled to remain until 15 January 2025. The council is seeking a solution that addresses both legal issues with the coastal authorities and the concerns of traders. A previous location near Postiguet beach remains a possible option, subject to approval.
