Dutch street artist “Dutch Danny,” a beloved personality in Benidorm, passed away suddenly on January 2 after being rushed to hospital. His passing has caused an outpouring of sadness and respect within the local community as well as among expats and tourists. Known for his ukulele performances and his unique, sometimes eccentric personality, Danny brought joy to many for many years. He lived on the streets and consciously chose to live a simple life, never asking for anything except a beer. Despite his circumstances, he had a large fan base and was considered an icon of Benidorm.

Crowdfunding for farewell

Although Danny still has family, they are not involved in his funeral. The Benidorm community has therefore started a fundraising campaign to cover the costs of his cremation, which amount to €1,200. The campaign, set up by a Dutch friend, has almost reached its goal. Many donors remember Danny as a kind and humble man who brought a smile to the lives of others. The organisers are calling on people to place flowers, photos, candles or even a can of beer at his favourite bench near Mariano’s, a place where he could be found every day. This bench, where many greeted him and had a chat, has now been given a small memorial.

Proposal for a lasting tribute

To keep his memory alive, the City Streets Community Project in Benidorm is considering asking the city council to convert Danny’s bench into a “Conversation Bench.” This type of bench, previously introduced successfully in Albir, encourages community connection and conversation. A plaque with Danny’s name would perpetuate his legacy and significance to Benidorm.

A special legacy

Danny’s life choice to leave his family behind and live on the streets was respected by many. He brought light into the lives of others without ever asking for anything in return. His passing is a great loss, but his legacy lives on in the memories, stories and the bench he called home. “Danny was not just a street performer, he was a friend, a legend and a symbol of simplicity and joy,” said one community member.
