The Cercanías train between Fuengirola and Málaga suffers from serious overcrowding, especially in the summer months, when the occupancy rate reaches 117 percent.

Recent report confirms problem

A recent report from the Ministry of Transport confirms the problems with the Cercanías train. 13.2 million passengers use the line annually, but the infrastructure cannot cope with the demand. To increase the frequency of trains, new routes must be built, including a doubling of the track at Campamento Benítez and the airport. Solutions are being studied, including double-decker trains and longer platforms. In addition, an extension of the line from Nerja to Algeciras is being considered, which could bring in 60 million passengers per year. However, the costs and complexity make implementation uncertain.
