E-scooters in Spain: hype or here to stay?

There’s a scooter leaning against a wall. Not neatly, not dramatically. Just there. As if someone decided, mid-journey, that this was where the story could pause for a moment. I stop, look at it, and think: this isn’t a means of transport — it’s a footnote in the streetscape.

In Spain, e-scooters are never really on the move. They’re somewhere. Standing. Waiting. And in the meantime, they pretend to save time.

Faster in theory

The idea is simple. Grab a scooter, step on, disappear. In practice, it starts with searching. For a scooter. For a pavement without bollards. Or for a stretch of street where no one suddenly decides to stop — to call someone, to talk, or simply to exist.

The time saved isn’t in the riding, but in the promise beforehand. That feeling of this will be more efficient. By the time someone finally sets off, I’ve already walked half the street. No battery, no app, no mental preparation required.

E-scooters save time the way takeaway saves cooking. Sometimes it works. Often only on paper.

Always in the wrong place

What stands out is this: scooters are rarely where you need them. They’re where someone no longer needed them. Outside a shop that just closed. In the middle of a pavement that already had no logic. Against a wall no one can pass — but everyone must.

They don’t block intentionally. They don’t claim space. They behave as if they’re temporary, even when they’ll still be there tomorrow. That makes them oddly elusive. You can’t really get angry at them. They’re too passive for frustration.

Scooters behave like loose ends in the city. Not wrong, not right. Just unfinished.

Trying without a plan

More than anything, scooters reveal how Spain deals with new ideas. Not through a grand masterplan, but with a shrug and a we’ll see. First you try. Then you look. Rules come later. Or not at all.

That makes scooters less of a hype and more of an experiment without an end date. They don’t disappear, but they’re never fully integrated either. There’s no clear place for them, no natural role. They remain suspended in between.

Half air-bike, half lifebuoy. Useful when it works. Awkward the moment you pay attention.

Where logic rubs

Scooters expose the friction between infrastructure and mentality. They ask for straight lines in a landscape that prefers curves. For predictability in streets that live on improvisation.

I keep walking. The scooter stays where it is. No one picks it up. No one visibly minds. Maybe that’s exactly why they stay. Not because they work perfectly — but because they never really force anyone to change.
