Former mayor of Gandia, Arturo Torró, was found dead next to his vehicle on the A-38 near Xeresa, Valencia, on February 19. He had a gunshot wound to the chest and signs of strangulation. His partner was at the scene and called the emergency services. The car was registered to his wife.
Legal problems after political career
Between 2011 and 2015, Torró was mayor on behalf of the Partido Popular. After his term of office, he became embroiled in legal proceedings. In 2023, the court sentenced him to three and a half years in prison and a six and a half year professional ban for embezzlement in the Tele 7 case. He was alleged to have used municipal funds to finance a local television station. Torró contested the charges and appealed, arguing that the case was politically motivated. The local Partido Popular faction distanced itself from him and other people involved.
Financial obligations to the municipality
In 2022, the Spanish Supreme Court ruled that the former mayor of Gandia must pay back €350,000 to the Gandia City Council for unauthorized payments to a media company.
Successful business career
In addition to his political career, Torró was known as an entrepreneur. From 1994 to 2008, he headed Masvisión, an optical chain with more than 300 branches in Spain and an annual turnover of €90 million. After the sale, he started the hearing care chain Angels Fon.
Investigation into cause of death
The Guardia Civil is investigating the circumstances of his death. Both personal and professional conflicts are being considered as possible causes. The authorities are continuing to investigate all scenarios.
