In my previous story, I shared how artichokes – that local superfood – can give your liver a detox boost after the holidays. But nutrition is just one side of the story. Starting the new year healthily also calls for exercise. And what could be better than a brisk walk in the fresh winter air of the Costa Blanca? This time, let me not only inspire you with the best routes but also explain why walking (or should I say art-jogging?) is the perfect way to bring body and mind into balance.

The power of walking

Walking may sound simple, but don’t underestimate the health benefits it offers. It’s a gentle form of cardio, great for your heart, muscles, and even your mood. Moreover, it helps your body eliminate toxins. Combine that with the nourishing foods from my detox article – think artichokes, citrus fruits, and rosemary – and you’ve got a golden combination to reset your body from the inside out. And for those still uncertain: you don’t need to be a marathon runner to see results. Research shows that even 7,000 steps a day can bring health benefits. The number of steps is less important than the quality of your movement. Especially when you choose a route with breathtaking views, like those found on the Costa Blanca.

The most beautiful hiking routes on the Costa Blanca

Let’s get practical. Here are my favorite places to hike on the Costa Blanca:

Montgó-berg (Dénia and Jávea)

This iconic mountain draws you in like a magnet to the top. The path winds through pine forests and rocky slopes, with scents of Mediterranean herbs like thyme and rosemary along the way. The view of the azure Mediterranean Sea and the surrounding villages is truly rewarding. For a range of hiking routes of varying difficulty, check out Dénia.net. Additionally, Javea Connect offers a description of popular routes on Montgó.

Sierra Helada (Benidorm – Albir)

For those who love cliffs and sea breezes, this nature reserve is a must-visit. You can choose shorter routes or go for a full-day hike, passing spectacular rock formations and secluded coves. Take a break at one of the viewpoints and breathe in the fresh air – you’ll immediately feel lighter. For a detailed description of the hike from Benidorm to Albir through the Sierra Helada nature park, including tips and photos, check out the article on MyFootprints.nl. You can also find more information about this and other hikes on the Costa Blanca at Reisbeesten.be.

Ruta del Faro de l’Albir (Albir)

This easy route to the lighthouse is perfect for beginners or a relaxing morning walk. The paved paths make it accessible for everyone, and along the way, you’ll not only see the sea, but you might even spot dolphins.

Detox 2.0: Combining Hiking on the Costa Blanca with Nutrition

Walking is not only good for your body, it can also cleanse your mind. Use the time to clear your thoughts or simply enjoy the silence around you. Bring a bottle of water with a slice of lemon and rosemary – my favorite combination – and perhaps some artichoke chips as a snack. After all, a detox is not just about what you eat, but also about what you let go of.

Hiking on the Costa del Sol

Are you ready for a weekend getaway from the Costa del Sol? The Sierra de Mijas, practically in your backyard, offers beautiful hiking routes and breathtaking views of the coastline. For a more rugged experience, you can plan a trip to the cliffs of Cabo de Gata in Almería, where the landscape feels almost otherworldly. In short: both the Costa Blanca and the Costa del Sol have everything you need to start the year both active and relaxed.

“Arti-jogging,” anyone?

Whether you opt for a challenging hike on Montgó or a leisurely walk along the coast, your body will thank you. Make walking a regular part of your routine and enjoy what nature has to offer along the way – maybe even spot an artichoke plant in the wild. Who knows, it might inspire you to live even healthier. Until next time, and remember: taking steps is more important than counting them. ¡Vamos a caminar!
