Train strikes will disrupt Renfe and Adif services across Spain in the coming weeks. This could have major consequences for travellers. Here you can read when the strikes will take place, which services will be affected and what the reason is behind the protests.

When will the train strikes take place?

Seven days of strikes are planned between March 17 and April 3:

  • 24-hour strikes: March 17, March 26 and April 1.
  • Partial strikes: On 19, 24 and 28 March and on 3 April there will be strikes at various times:
    • March 19: 06:00 – 09:00, 14:00 – 17:00, 21:00 – 23:00.
    • March 24: 06:30 – 09:30, 14:30 – 17:30, 20:30 – 22:30.
    • March 28: 06:00 – 09:00, 13:30 – 16:30, 20:30 – 23:00.
    • April 3: 6:30 AM – 9:30 AM, 2:30 PM – 5:30 PM, 9:00 PM – 11:00 PM.

Which services are affected?

The strike affects several train lines throughout Spain. The Cercanías (Rodalies in Catalonia), medium and long-distance trains are particularly affected. The exact impact will depend on the timing of the work stoppages and the minimum service guaranteed by Renfe and Adif.

Why is there a strike?

Unions are protesting the way in which Rodalies services are being transferred to the Catalan government. This transfer is part of the agreement that Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez made with Catalan separatist parties in 2023 to obtain a government majority. Renfe and Adif workers fear that this change will reduce safety and interoperability with the national and European rail network. It could also entail additional costs for the people of Catalonia.

What does this mean for travelers?

Travelers are advised to check their travel plans carefully and consider alternative means of transportation if possible. Renfe and Adif will publish advance updates on the minimum service and affected trains on their official channels.

Anyone who has to travel by train on these days is advised to consult the latest information to avoid unexpected problems.
