Málaga is introducing a ban on holiday rentals in 43 neighbourhoods this month, in a bid to tackle overcrowding on the Costa del Sol. The new rules have been introduced to limit holiday rentals in 43 congested neighbourhoods, including the historic centre and La Merced. The ban comes amid concerns over mass tourism, housing shortages and rising costs for local residents. The measure bans the registration of new holiday homes in neighbourhoods where more than 8% of family homes are already rented out to tourists.

Holiday rentals in Malaga: restoring balance

The city aims to restore the balance between the benefits of tourism and the quality of life for its residents. The ban will be in place for 12 months, with the possibility of extension. The changes are part of wider measures in Spain to limit the negative effects of overtourism, with similar steps being taken in cities such as Barcelona and Alicante.
