18-year-old Mansour Konte from Guinea-Conakry recently deeply affected the city of Malaga with his courageous action during the heavy rains on November 13. When the streets of the Huelin neighborhood were flooded, the asylum seeker did not hesitate to rescue a woman trapped in the water on Calle Héroes de Sostoa. His heroic act was captured on video and quickly went viral on social media, leading to widespread recognition and appreciation.
Mansour’s journey to Spain was anything but easy. The asylum seeker arrived in the Canary Islands, in October 2023 on a rickety boat, after a perilous crossing via the ‘Canary Route’, one of the riskiest migration routes. In his home country he was a boat captain and spoke five languages. After arriving in Spain, he applied for asylum and was admitted to a reception programme run by the Commission for Aid to Refugees (CEAR). During his stay in Málaga , he worked to build a new life, despite the challenges of waiting for his asylum application to be approved.
