In autumn, people do a big clean. In spring, they detox. But I believe July is actually the best time to recalibrate your life. Not with scrubbing cloths or endless to-do lists, but with sunlight and softness. Summer lets us reorganise life without rigid lines. No Marie Kondo, just mental space.
Since moving to Spain, I notice it every year: summer gently loosens you from your routines. Schedules fade. Agendas become more flexible. Meals shift, nights stretch out. And suddenly, space appears. Not just in your calendar, but in your mind.
When the heat slows you down, you start to realise just how full your mind was before. And how much you do on autopilot, without ever asking yourself: do I really want to keep doing it this way?
I haven’t decluttered anything this month. Not my kitchen cupboards, not my inbox. But I did do something else: I shifted my morning routine. Moved my balcony chair to a spot with less glare. Left a drawer in the living room empty—just to let it be empty. Small changes, but suddenly my mind felt… lighter.
It’s a common misconception that reorganising is always about stuff. Sometimes it’s your rhythm. Other times, it’s your energy. And every now and then, it’s a habit that no longer fits.
In summer, you don’t need a six-step morning routine and an ice bath. What you need is awareness. Of the morning light, of your need to slow down. And of the fact that maybe you don’t fully wake up until noon — and that’s perfectly fine.
What helps me? Mornings without my phone. Starting the day with water and silence. And most of all: fewer shoulds. I actually saw a lot of myself in Lucas’ piece on “The art of doing nothing in the garden.” We’re all looking for peace — but sometimes, you need to stop looking in order to truly find it.
This isn’t a call for major life changes. You don’t need to turn everything upside down. But maybe this month, you can gently rearrange something. Let go of something that no longer serves you. Shift something small so it feels more aligned.
Summer isn’t a season for being strict. It’s a time to reorganise your life. An invitation to breathe, to feel, and to slowly realign your compass.
