Tomatina in Buñol: Spain’s reddest festival

Some festivals are stylish and refined. La Tomatina in Buñol is not. And that’s exactly the point. On the last Wednesday of August — the 27th this year — this quiet town near Valencia turns into a battlefield of juicy tomatoes.

From prank to world-famous spectacle

It started in 1945 as a prank that got out of hand — a few youngsters throwing tomatoes at each other during a village parade. They did it again the following year, just for fun. Today, it’s grown into an official event with thousands of participants from all over the world, but the playful, anarchic spirit still remains.

The moment it all kicks off

At exactly 11:00 AM, the signal sounds and trucks loaded with overripe tomatoes roll into the square. What follows is one hour of pure chaos: tomatoes flying through the air, streets turning red, and everyone slowly transforming into a walking pasta sauce. It’s far from tidy — but surprisingly liberating.

Surviving the tomato onslaught

A few tips can make the difference between euphoria and utter misery. Wear clothes you don’t mind throwing away, protect your eyes with goggles, and don’t forget to squash the tomatoes before you throw them — it’s not just tradition, it’s safer too. Shoes with grip are essential; the streets quickly turn into a slippery pulp.

What you don’t see in the photos

Amid the red rain, the best moments happen. A stranger helping you up with a smile when you slip. People spontaneously ‘decorating’ each other’s faces with thick layers of tomato pulp. And the smell — a mix of summer heat and ripe tomatoes — that lingers with you for hours.

After the battle

After the battle, Buñol comes back to life in a different mood. Locals hose down the walls, cafés fill up with soaked participants, and the scent of grilled sausages drifts through the air. You don’t just walk away with a red-stained shirt — but with a wide smile and a story you’ll be telling for years.

Why you have to do it at least once

It’s loud, messy, and completely impractical — and that’s exactly why it’s unforgettable. La Tomatina in Buñol isn’t a festival to watch; it’s one to be right in the middle of. An hour later, you’re tired, red, and sticky — but also one of the thousands who just took part in Spain’s happiest fight.
