The president of the Generalitat Valenciana, Carlos Mazón, has signed a declaration of intent in Torrevieja. The signing took place alongside the city council in the town hall’s council chamber. The goal: the restoration of the iconic Fábrica de Hielo.

Historic building to be repurposed for tourism

The former ice factory has been designated as a Site of Architectural Urban Interest. The building will be repurposed to house the tourist office and other municipal departments.

Urban project approved and nearing tender stage

Last week, the city council approved the overall project. It covers not only the building itself but also the redevelopment of the adjacent plot, creating a single integrated space of more than 600 square meters.

According to city spokesperson Federico Alarcón, the tender process will begin within a few weeks. The total budget for this phase amounts to €6.6 million.

Exhibition space and tourism combined

The ground floor will be repurposed as an exhibition space, integrated into the Museo del Mar. The building will also house the administrative offices of the tourist service and a public information desk.

Original façade to be preserved

The design focuses on preserving and restoring the original façade. All decorative elements will remain intact. While the rounded corner on the ground floor will be removed, the building’s characteristic balcony will be preserved.

Financial support provided in multiple phases

Carlos Mazón confirmed that the Generalitat will begin with an investment of €100,000 in 2025. Larger amounts will follow as the work progresses, with contributions potentially reaching up to €2 million between 2026 and 2027.

Part of a broader plan for Torrevieja

The redevelopment of the Fábrica de Hielo is part of a broader urban project:

  • The restoration of the historic Eras de la Sal site

  • The construction of the new Museo del Mar y de la Sal

  • The new Habaneras Auditorium at the former shipyard of Marina Internacional

  • The redevelopment of the surrounding area

In the coming years, Torrevieja will gain a new cultural and tourist center.
