M\u00e1laga was thrown into disarray on Wednesday by a large-scale taxi strike. Hundreds of angry taxi drivers paralyzed traffic in protest at the sky-high insurance costs, which they say are unsustainable. The action, which lasted until 2 p.m., included roadblocks and loudly honking taxis<\/a> demanding the attention of the city council. The protest march began at 10 a.m. at the parking lot of the Jos\u00e9 Mar\u00eda Mart\u00edn Carpena Sports Palace. By 11 a.m., a long column of taxis was moving through the city, with more and more drivers joining. By midday, traffic on the Paseo Mar\u00edtimo had come to a complete standstill, despite earlier promises to keep lanes clear. The aim of the taxi strike was to hand over a manifesto to Mayor Francisco de la Torre. The drivers are demanding that the city council make a commitment to the national government to stop treating them as high-risk VTC drivers and to reduce their sky-high insurance premiums.<\/p>\n
