If you\u2019d asked me a few years ago what I associated with Easter, I probably would\u2019ve mumbled something about chocolate eggs, brunch at my parents\u2019 place, and maybe a trip to IKEA on Easter Monday. But since moving to Spain, Easter has become something entirely different. Here, Semana Santa doesn\u2019t start with bunnies \u2014 it starts with drums. Big ones. The kind you feel pounding in your chest. <\/p>\n
Semana Santa \u2014 Holy Week \u2014 is not a cheerful family celebration with decorated branches. It\u2019s a deeply rooted tradition where religion, culture, and raw emotion collide. And especially in Andalusia, it\u2019s an experience you won\u2019t forget anytime soon. <\/p>\n

Chill-inducing processions<\/h4>\n
The first time I witnessed a procession, I was completely overwhelmed. Thousands of people in the streets, an almost sacred silence, and then suddenly, a slow, solemn parade of men in pointed hoods (yes, you\u2019ll have to separate that image from what you might think) carrying a giant statue of a saint on their shoulders. The air is thick with incense, and somewhere from a balcony, someone sings a saeta<\/em>\u2014a raw, emotional, almost sobbing song, no microphone, but you hear it. And you feel it. <\/p>\n

In M\u00e1laga, Semana Santa is exuberant, almost theatrical. In Seville, it\u2019s intense and awe-inspiring, with the famous hermandades<\/em> (brotherhoods) walking the same routes they have for centuries. In smaller villages, it\u2019s more modest and personal. But everywhere, one thing holds true: Semana Santa is not just an event \u2014 it\u2019s a deeply rooted religious experience that connects generations. <\/p>\n
