By now, I\u2019ve learned: holidays here don\u2019t just fall on different dates \u2014 they feel different too. And D\u00eda de la Madre, or Mother\u2019s Day, is no exception.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"479\" data-end=\"833\">This Sunday, I expect to see the same scene as last year at the market in J\u00e1vea: flowers, cakes, baskets, and people with huge smiles. \u201cFeliz d\u00eda, mam\u00e1!\u201d echoes from caf\u00e9s and across terraces. And while the rest of Europe still thinks Mother\u2019s Day is a week away, Spain already knows: now is the time to celebrate mam\u00e1.  <\/p>\n<h4 data-start=\"840\" data-end=\"881\">No handmade crafts or breakfast in bed<\/h4>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"883\" data-end=\"1325\">What struck me most is the different vibe around Mother\u2019s Day here. It\u2019s less commercial. No weeks of perfume ads, no supermarket campaigns offering \u201cworldly wines for worldly mothers.\u201d D\u00eda de la Madre feels less rehearsed.   <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"883\" data-end=\"1325\">Here, it\u2019s all about being together for a moment, with a cake on the table and a good meal shared with family. It\u2019s not about presents, but about attention. Often, literally: children calling or showing up at the door with something small but sweet.  <\/p>\n<h4 data-start=\"1332\" data-end=\"1387\">In Spain, it\u2019s all about simplicity (but with plenty of food).<\/h4>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1389\" data-end=\"1915\">Most Spanish mothers don\u2019t expect extravagant surprises. A bouquet of flowers, a slice of <em data-start=\"1484\" data-end=\"1503\">tarta de Santiago<\/em>, a glass of vermouth on the terrace. Some head to the mountains for a picnic, while others cook together with their children.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1389\" data-end=\"1915\">And everyone seems to accept that it\u2019s not about the gesture itself, but about the ritual of celebrating together. While we Dutch sometimes struggle with \u201cshould we do something for Mother\u2019s Day?\u201d, Spain seems to say: of course you do something \u2014 but don\u2019t overcomplicate it. <\/p>\n<h4 data-start=\"1922\" data-end=\"1955\">\u201cSpanish mothers are sacred\u201d<\/h4>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1957\" data-end=\"2340\">A friend of mine said recently, \u201cIn Spain, your mother is the holiest. She\u2019s just below the Virgin Mar\u00eda.\u201d I laughed, but it also sounded true. Spanish mothers have a kind of mythical status. They can involve themselves in everything, are always available, and if you haven\u2019t been in touch for a week, you\u2019ll be kindly but firmly urged to make a <em data-start=\"2322\" data-end=\"2337\">visita r\u00e1pida<\/em> (quick visit).   <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2409\" data-end=\"2764\">D\u00eda de la Madre always falls on the <strong data-start=\"2445\" data-end=\"2470\">first Sunday of May<\/strong>. So, if you think you\u2019ve got another week to prepare \u2014 think again. Your phone might act like it\u2019s not time yet, but Spain moves to a different rhythm. And I\u2019ve learned that by now, especially since I paid tribute to <a href=\"https:\/\/thesoundofthecosta.com\/en\/today-is-dia-del-padre-in-spain-and-they-celebrate-it-in-style\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Spanish dads back in March<\/a>.   <\/p>\n<h4 data-start=\"2409\" data-end=\"2764\">Personal tip: Don\u2019t forget the cake!<\/h4>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2816\" data-end=\"3158\">Want to really score points? Skip the perfume and grab something from the local bakery \u2014 preferably with almond, lemon, or anise. And stay a while for a chat.<br data-start=\"2982\" data-end=\"2985\">In Spain, Mother\u2019s Day isn\u2019t just a moment, it\u2019s an atmosphere.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2816\" data-end=\"3158\">And once you\u2019ve felt it, you\u2019ll understand exactly why it\u2019s not about presents \u2014 but all about attention.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Earlier this year, I celebrated my first Spanish Father\u2019s Day \u2014 in March \u2014 while the rest of Europe wasn\u2019t even thinking about it yet. Voor mij is Spanje meer dan een plek om te wonen; het is een eindeloze bron van inspiratie.
