When I first found myself in the middle of it last year, I thought: wait a minute\u2026 isn\u2019t this just an Andalusian party in disguise? <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"299\" data-end=\"463\">And yes, this month we\u2019re diving into Spain\u2019s inland. After my story about <a href=\"https:\/\/thesoundofthecosta.com\/en\/?p=12840\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cruces de Mayo in C\u00f3rdoba<\/a>, this one is about a celebration in the Spanish capital. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"465\" data-end=\"722\">There were horses, flamenco dresses, <em>churros<\/em>, and <em>sevillanas<\/em>. But also: people in suits, frayed hats, and\u2026 Madrile\u00f1os who act like it\u2019s in their DNA to dance all day to the rhythm of a <em>paso doble<\/em>. And you know what? Maybe it actually is.    <\/p>\n<h4 class=\"\" data-start=\"724\" data-end=\"769\">A tribute to the patron saint of Madrid<\/h4>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"771\" data-end=\"1114\">San Isidro was a humble farmer from the 12th century, known for his divine connection with water and workhorses. Today, he is the patron saint of Madrid, and around May 15, a whole week of festivities kicks off in the capital. Whether you\u2019re religious or not, it\u2019s impossible not to be swept up by the vibrant atmosphere.  <\/p>\n<h4 class=\"\" data-start=\"1116\" data-end=\"1144\">From procession to feria<\/h4>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1146\" data-end=\"1450\">The official procession is impressive \u2014 with locals in traditional attire and a statue of San Isidro being carried through the streets. But it\u2019s really the atmosphere afterward that makes it special: park picnics in the Pradera de San Isidro, open-air performances, stalls with sweets, and dancing everywhere. Truly everywhere.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1452\" data-end=\"1650\">People dress in mass in <em>chulapo and chulapa costumes<\/em>, complete with polka dots, roses, and shoulder capes. Even children get into the spirit and dress up. The city transforms into a blend of folklore and lively celebration.  <\/p>\n<h4 class=\"\" data-start=\"1652\" data-end=\"1688\">A feria, but with a Castilian twist.<\/h4>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1690\" data-end=\"2051\">While the <em>ferias in Andalusia<\/em> are full of sevillanas and sherry, San Isidro carries a bit more of that Castilian pride. Less flashy, but just as expressive. Think: wooden fairground carts, ancient dances, thick churros with chocolate, and plenty \u2014 a lot \u2014 of mantones de Manila (those embroidered shawls with fringes that you usually only see in flamenco shops).  <\/p>\n<h4 class=\"\" data-start=\"2053\" data-end=\"2083\">Tip for those on the Costa:<\/h4>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2085\" data-end=\"2342\">If you\u2019re not in Madrid but still want to experience the spirit of San Isidro, many other cities with strong Madrilean roots host their own smaller celebrations.
