The Saturday bustle in J\u00e1vea, the <a href=\"https:\/\/thesoundofthecosta.com\/en\/mercat-del-riurau-the-scents-and-flavours-of-a-sunday-morning-in-jesus-pobre\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i>Mercat del Riurau<\/i><\/a> in Jes\u00fas Pobre, or the <a href=\"https:\/\/thesoundofthecosta.com\/en\/the-last-chance-to-taste-winter-discover-spains-forgotten-winter-markets\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stalls in the Jal\u00f3n Valley<\/a> \u2014 I\u2019ve written about them before. But what about further south? When I visited Lucas for a weekend at his finca just outside M\u00e1laga, I got the chance to experience it for myself. A Sunday market on the Costa del Sol: the same vibrancy, but with its own character and accents.    <\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p1\">The scent of the morning<\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\">Sunday morning starts early. While the city is still slowly waking up, the first stalls are already open. In M\u00e1laga you\u2019ll find the <a href=\"https:\/\/mamamalaga.com\/street-markets-of-the-costa-del-sol\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rastro at the Recinto Ferial<\/a>: a maze of second-hand goods, crafts and scents mingling in the air. Down by the harbour at Muelle Uno, every second Sunday of the month it\u2019s the turn of <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.visitacostadelsol.com\/en\/a-tour-of-the-best-street-markets-on-the-costa-del-sol\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">El Zoco<\/a>, a market that\u2019s more about crafts and delicacies, with views of the boats. It\u2019s a different kind of bustle than in Jes\u00fas Pobre or Jal\u00f3n: bigger, louder, but just as charming.   <\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p1\">Mountains of fruit and buckets of olives<\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\">Whether you\u2019re in M\u00e1laga, in Estepona at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.holaestepona.eu\/things-to-see\/sunday-market-in-the-port-of-estepona\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sunday market in the marina<\/a>, or in one of the smaller villages, you\u2019ll find the same abundance of colour everywhere. Mountains of figs and grapes, piles of citrus, tubs full of olives in every flavour. People shout, laugh, bargain. \u201cPrueba, prueba,\u201d rings out from all sides. Tasting is encouraged, buying is optional. It\u2019s a market that welcomes you with open arms.     <\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p1\">The social market<\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\">What these markets have in common is that it\u2019s not just about trade. Just as on the Costa Blanca, the market here is a meeting place. Families shuffle past the stalls, neighbours catch up, children dart between the tables. You see tourists looking a little uncertain at first, but soon they\u2019re swept up in the rhythm of the day. A market here isn\u2019t a tourist attraction, but a slice of living Andalusian life.    <\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p1\">Why it feels different from the Costa Blanca<\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\">Still, the feeling is different from the villages of the Marina Alta. The scale is larger, the tone louder, the accents unmistakably Andalusian. Where Costa Blanca markets often feel cosy and village-like, here there\u2019s more bravado. But the principle is the same: food, encounters, and starting Sunday with a bag full of treats and stories.
