Waiting here isn\u2019t a punishment \u2014 it\u2019s a habit. In Spain, time doesn\u2019t seem to be measured in minutes, but in moments. The bus arrives when it arrives, the plumber comes \u201caround midday\u201d, and the post office closes when the person behind the counter feels like it. What triggers frustration in Northern Europe turns into something close to philosophy here: a quiet exercise in letting go. <\/p>\n

The Spanish lifestyle forces you into patience, whether you want it or not. And somewhere between endless queues and delayed appointments, there may be a lesson we\u2019ve forgotten. <\/p>\n

Time is in no hurry here<\/h4>\n

When I first moved to Moraira, I tried to plan everything the way I did in the Netherlands. A packed agenda, punctual to every appointment. Until one day I found myself at the bank, standing behind five people who showed absolutely no sense of urgency. The clerk chatted with each of them as if it were a village f\u00eate. At first I felt irritated \u2014 and then it hit me: this is the rhythm here. Time isn\u2019t the enemy; it\u2019s background music. <\/p>\n

In an earlier article about ma\u00f1ana ma\u00f1ana<\/a><\/i><\/span>, I wrote about how this country runs on a different clock. It\u2019s not about efficiency, but about presence. And the longer I live here, the more I value that. <\/p>\n

The beauty of useless minutes<\/h4>\n

Somewhere between waiting and doing nothing, something special begins: attention. Standing in line at the bakery, I catch fragments of conversation about the weather, the harvest, or the neighbour\u2019s grandchildren. Nobody checks their phone. People actually wait. <\/p>\n

In the Netherlands we\u2019d call that wasted time. Here, it\u2019s called life. <\/p>\n

I\u2019m reminded of my piece on the art of Spanish strolling<\/a><\/i><\/span>, where I realised that walking slowly isn\u2019t a lack of pace, but a way of seeing. Maybe the same applies to waiting: those who don\u2019t rush, notice more. <\/p>\n

Waiting as a mirror<\/h4>\n

Spain confronts you with yourself. Because when you lose patience in line at the town hall, that\u2019s not Spain\u2019s fault \u2014 it\u2019s yours. Waiting exposes how little silence and slowness we still tolerate. <\/p>\n

A Spanish friend once joked: \u201cIn the Netherlands you have watches; in Spain we have time.\u201d And he\u2019s right. Behind the clich\u00e9 of ma\u00f1ana ma\u00f1ana lies not laziness, but trust \u2014 the belief that things will happen, just not right now. <\/p>\n

The invisible art<\/h4>\n

In winter, when the tourists have left and life slows down, it becomes natural. The shopkeeper who chats before ringing you up. The postman who stops for a coffee halfway through his round. Nobody rushes \u2014 and yet everything gets done. <\/p>\n

Maybe that\u2019s the real art of waiting: learning that time isn\u2019t always something to fill, but something to rest in.<\/p>\n
