A friend from England asked me recently: “Has wine basically become part of your interior by now?”
I laughed — not because it was exaggerated, but because it was actually quite true.
Here, wine is quite literally part of life — not just in the glass, but in the way you live in your home. And that might be the most beautiful lesson life on the Costas teaches you: you don’t need to build a wine cellar or become a sommelier. But you can shape your home in a way that leaves room for what truly matters. We’re closing this Wine Month with wine as a source of inspiration for living.
A wine space doesn’t have to be a bodegaLaat ik beginnen met een bekentenis: ik heb geen wijnkelder.
Wine doesn’t get its own separate room in my home — it’s simply part of the space I live in.
More and more homes along the Costas are being designed with the climate in mind. Cool floors, thick walls, good insulation. Those aren’t just smart choices — they also create an atmosphere where wine feels right at home.
I know people who’ve built a niche in the wall from local stone just for their favourite bottles. Others repurpose old wine crates as wall shelves or bedside tables — not as a gimmick, but because it fits how they want to live: simple, local, and mindful of materials.
The best thing about life here? Indoors and outdoors flow into each other. Most wine isn’t enjoyed inside, but on the terrace, by the barbecue, or at a long table under a pergola.
That’s why it makes perfect sense to design your outdoor space so that wine feels naturally at home there. A small outdoor kitchen. A stone table in the shade. Plants that release their scent when the air warms up. And yes — maybe a spot where your glasses can dry under a little canopy.
What I’ve learned in Spain is that wine doesn’t have to be a display. You don’t need to talk about tannins or vintages. Wine is a gesture — placing a bottle on the table is simply a way of saying, “you’re welcome.”
If you shape your home around that gesture — open, warm, relaxed — wine becomes something that lives not just in the bottle, but in the walls, the light, and the rhythm of your day.
Maybe that’s it, in the end. Not a “wine house,” but a home that invites moments at the table. Not for parties, but simply for being together. For me, that’s what modern living means — not grander, but more human.
A home where a bottle of wine isn’t tucked away, but waiting — like a chair for an unexpected guest, or a shady spot for a long conversation. In short: there’s hardly a more beautiful source of inspiration for living than… wine.
