The Low Emission Zone (ZBE) in Alicante will come into effect on 30 January. The area around the old town will continue to have the same restrictions as in 2011 and is now classified as ZBE Zone 1. Vehicles with high emissions will be banned. In Zone 2 (traditional centre) and Zone 3 (Gran Via) there will be no changes for vehicles. The policy for the Low Emission Zone in Alicante is “flexible” and there will be no additional restrictions or fines, except in cases of high pollution levels, where temporary measures may be applied. The council has installed 70 cameras and 10 information screens to support the system. The cameras can read number plates and are connected via fibre optic lines. Sensors for air quality measurements have also been installed.
